Можно сделать так:
function TMD_FILE.OpenFile(FileName: WideString): HRESULT;
begin
Result:=StgIsStorageFile(PWideChar(FileName));
if Result=S_OK then
Result:=StgOpenStorage(PWideChar(FileName), nil, STGM_READWRITE or STGM_SHARE_EXCLUSIVE, nil, 0, FRootStorage)
else
Exit;
end;

где FRootStorage: IStorage
